Interview with Miyuki Lu

Ever since she watched Sailor Moon fighting evil by moonlight, Miyuki Lu has been following the anime world.  She has been an active part of the community, cosplaying as some of her favorite characters since April 2013.  When New Jersey/ New York based Miyuki Lu is not furiously sewing up details on her costumes, she is busy working hard in college and eating mint chocolate or green tea ice cream. Jane: How did you get into cosplay? Miyuki: My interest in cosplaying all started with watching Tricia Gosingtian years ago on deviantArt because I really loved her photography work. From there I stumbled upon her cosplay photoshoots of Alodia Gosiengfiao and Jin Joson and I ended up watching them and being fascinated with how they portray and bring to life some of my favorite characters that it just got me wanting to cosplay as well. 1000311_535003839887198_1899118755_n

Jane: You make your own outfits right?  How long does it normally take you and how much do you normally spend on the whole look? Miyuki: Yes, when it comes to sewing I usually sew everything myself, but concerning some large scale prop work I’m still a novice so I usually ask people, like my boyfriend, to help make my props or borrow props from friends. Time frame and how much money I spent…it really depends on how big and intricate the cosplay is. Usually at least the minimum amount of time I spend making on a cosplay is no more than a week and the amount of money…somewhere around 150 – 200+ USD. Jane: Do you prefer solo cosplay or group cosplay? Miyuki: I love group cosplays it’s always fun being in a big group with your friends who love the same series as you do and want to cosplay with you! Jane: How far do you assume your cosplay role?  Do you try to act in character? Miyuki: Besides for photos, or when the moment calls for it, I don’t really try going as far as to assume the role of the character I cosplay as. It’s amazing when cosplayers stay in character, but if there are characters that come off as being a little more rude than I want to be I don’t want to stay in character the whole time and plausibly offend people or make people feel uncomfortable who aren’t familiar with the character I am portraying. 1005129_519789228075326_1928164222_n

Jane: Do you have any funny or interesting cosplay experiences? Miyuki: When I was cosplaying as Nonon from Kill La Kill in her Nudist Beach attire at AnimeNEXT there was a group of Japanese men at the convention who asked for my picture and my friend’s picture who was cosplaying as Stocking from Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. I heard them call us “kawaii” and I ended up wheezing in front of them. And then I heard them say “pantsu”, mind you that the Nudist Beach attire is really revealing, and I felt super uncomfortable and awkward and wanted to run away as fast as I could when I heard that. Well, I later found out that the people who took my picture ended up being Studio Trigger, the creators of Kill La Kill, and I am just kind of amazed with how awkward I was acting. Jane: Do you have any cosplay idols?  Cosplayers whom you admire? Miyuki: I have a lot of cosplayers I admire, but I think someone I would consider my cosplay idol the most would be Jin Joson aka Behindinfinity. Jin was one of the main reasons why I got into cosplaying in the first place and Jin is really nice in giving out tips and advice concerning cosplay and such. Jane: What animes are you currently watching/ following? Miyuki: I usually try watching whatever the latest animes are each season. So as of now it’s: Sword Art Online II, Tokyo Ghoul, Dramatical Murder, Yami Shibai 2nd Season, Love Stage!!, Free! Eternal Summer, and Ao Haru Ride. Jane: What are your top three favorite characters of all time? Miyuki: My top three favorite characters of all time might have to be: Hyuuga Hinata from Naruto, Tina Belcher from Bob’s Burgers, and the Sanrio character Gudetama! 10543589_688568474530733_2661814367476014741_o

Jane: Do you see yourself cosplaying in 10 years? Miyuki: I’d like to see myself cosplaying for that long! It’s such a fun hobby and I’ve made a lot of good friends and met a lot of wonderful people. Why would I stop, haha. Jane: Are you playing any games right now? Miyuki: Currently I’m playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster, and TERA: Rising. Jane: Who is your ideal anime boyfriend? Miyuki:  Oh dear, with every series I manage to fall in love with some new character! I think right now I like Uta from Tokyo Ghoul. I haven’t read the manga series yet so I don’t know much about his character, but he’s artsy, has a sense of style, incredibly adorable that I want to hug him, and the piercings and tattoos are an added bonus. Haha! 1932444_619975214723393_1723869497_n
