As far as manga creators go, Naoki Urasawa is one of the big guns with an endless list of successful titles. Some of my personal favorites include Master Keaton, 20th Century Boys, and Monster. His perspective is one that is diverse and unfathomably imaginative. So you can imagine my delight when I was extended an invitation to Japan House for the preview of their Urasawa exhibit. The show was This Is Manga: The Art of Naoki Urasawa. It was a gorgeous collection of raw art from the man himself. As a writer of comics I was overwhelmed as soon as…
Spider-Man was the first hero that I was able to identify with at a young age. He was able to convince me that it was those who were often overlooked that had the most resolve among us. So an “Arkham Asylum” style game for Spider-Man left me enthusiastic at the chance to sling webs and deliver memorable quips. After playing the game and I was left with a desire for more Spider-Man. So when Sony released their downloadable content “Spider Man: The City that Never Sleeps” I finally I was able to sink my fists into more goons. The First…
I have become a pro at giving the talk about getting rejected in the game industry. A big reason for that is due to my field being narrative design and writing. There are a sparse number of these jobs available in the game industry. People often ask me “how does that work?” or “how do you get into that?” I will say with full transparency that I have been very lucky. I have been lucky to have people recognize my writing skills who happen to be making games. The odds are downright savage for anyone looking to write in games.…
I ran into this lovely lady at Dreamhack Atlanta and I have been a fan ever since. She was competing in the final Halo Championship Series and I was impressed with how cool she was under pressure. She’s also just a big ball of positivity and passionate fandom. Starski Wars works hard to maintain her healthy following on Twitch and has some great tips for others looking to get into streaming. Would you consider yourself a lifelong gamer? Yes, I started gaming at a younger age with games that varied from The Legend of Dragoon to other titles like Golden…

In today’s political climate, the area of identity politics is a powder keg ready to blow at the slightest Facebook comment. When discussing privilege and socioeconomic advantages and disadvantages, conversations can escalate quickly and points are hard to convey. Chicago game developer Avian Rampage Productions has managed to gamify this conversation with a card game sucessfully funded on Kickstarter. Americana: The Card Game is a brutal and addictive card game steeped in the American climate of the 1950’s and 60’s. This is an era that is often romanticized as the peak of the United States, however when you take a…

Vice News recently did a piece on the juggernaut that is Fortnite. Part of the piece involved looking at professional Fornite boosters, people who get paid to play on other people’s accounts to boost their stats which is not new for gaming. However, next up was the story of a father who hired a Fortnite tutor for his son who was being bullied for being bad at the game. It was at this point I had to turn it off. Look, I understand that there is a certain amount of shit talk allowed when it comes to being bad a…
