Bethany Maddock Chats with Sugar Gamers about her incredible cosplays!
Ignite Gaming Lounge in Chicago has complimented Chicago’s robust video game scene for a while now and recently they decided to expand their empire. The family run business has planted their flag in Skokie, conveniently close to the yellow line stop. Ignite decided to do a soft “Alpha Test” this week and opened its doors to industry folks and friends. Sugar Gamers was lucky enough to be extended an invitation and we had a blast. Our founder Keisha Howard and Ignite Co-Owner Sam Oanta There were plenty of game enthusiasts lined up outside the door to get into the impressive…
You don’t have to be a FPS game fan to appreciate Halo’s vast lore. It’s a solid sci-fi universe with lots of mystery and intrigue and above all, characters I love sinking my teeth into. Today I was scrolling through Twitter and saw two stories that had me very excited. One, Kat-B320 is getting her own Legendary Crate from Loot Crate in February. This Noble team member happens to be a personal favorite due to her crass personality and superior technical knowledge. She doesn’t care about being liked but you’ll thank your lucky stars you have her on your side.…
There are certain art forms that are distinctly American. In the literary sense the genre of the western is a central core of the American archetype of the lone rugged individualism that has defined the mythos of the nation. This is why I was excited for a proper installment of the genre in the online gaming medium with the beta launch of Red Dead Online. On the surface RD Online beta hits all the traditional western tropes; sprawling wide-open landscapes, shootouts, robberies, cattle rustling, and bounty hunting. In this sense it takes the genre seriously with enough customization effects to…
During my adventures at Dreamhack Atlanta I was alerted to an interesting new shooter from 1047 Games that goes by the handle of Splitgate. It combines a mechanic similar to that of Portal and FPS action that would be comparable to Halo. My personal demo was in the hands of 1047’s CEO and Co-Founder Ian Proulx, who also happens to be a very accomplished Halo 5 player. His FPS passion translates very well in the alpha gameplay I experienced. The portal mechanic adds a whole new dimension to the shooter genre. It’s not something that is mastered overnight, but it…
It was a cold and dreary comic convention in November complete with winter storm warning and I happened to stumble upon artist and writer Asia Dye. Her vibrant and original art immediately jumped out at me. I was completely drawn in by her bold color stories and striking line work. I rushed to her table and immediately got into her business, like I do. Her comic is Project:AEGIS and I learned she co-writes it with her very long time friend and partner Ve’Amber D. Miller. I love their story as much as I love this comic and I have a…
Halo 5 is hanging up its hat in terms of official esports tournaments and Dreamhack Atlanta housed the goodbye party with the HCS (Halo Championship Series) Finals. It was a hell of a show with top halo teams getting downright scrappy to claim this final title. Re-Watch Alert: Renegades vs. Elevate First things, first, I wanna get into Renegades and Elevate. Their series on Friday was one to remember. This was the first time I saw Renegades sweat at this tournament, and that sweat was warranted. Elevate was throwing down some damn fine gameplay. Elevate’s Ace was showing off immaculate…
(featured image from Orun. art credit: Julio Rocha) I met local game deb Nell Raban at a meetup of game writers in downtown Chicago. We hit it off talking about the industry and what we love and wish would improve. It’s always fun to commiserate with other game writers. She has an impressive work ethic and lots of ideas. I want to thank her for taking the time to share her story. Rebecca Rothschild: What drew you into the world of game development? Nell Raban: I’ve been playing games on and off my whole life, but it never occurred to me that…
Much to my delight, the entirety of MTV’s animated show Daria has been available on Hulu and naturally I had to binge. For those too young to know, there was a time when MTV was relevant. They used to produce highly original and thought provoking content. They even had Kurt Loder report some fucking news. This was a golden age that died a slow, miserable death as ratings pointed toward reality TV. One of the gems that spawned from this time was an animated show based on a reocurring character on Beavis and Butthead called Daria. She was sarcastic, easily…
Last weekend I was invited as a guest at a micro con at the infamous Blue Box Cafe in Elgin and my neighbor was Xane Daniel. Turns out Xane and I have a few things in common, one being that we have both worked in the video game industry, granted he’s got quite a few years on me, and we also love making comics. I was immediately drawn to the concept of Xane’s comic book series Righteous and his whole point of view on comics and how he goes about producing them. Rebecca Rothschild: Can we get the Xane Daniel origin…
